In some ways “The Kiss” is Judee Sill’s best song. Her arrangement is spotless and the melody soars and dips in gorgeous unexpected ways. Sill’s delivery feels like a love song that a nun would write to Jesus. She’s in ecstasy the whole time, and it’s an unshakeable powerful thing. [Emily Holden and I] were going for self-immolation in the vocal take, the same kind of ecstasy in Sill’s delivery pushed past the point of it being pleasurable.
